Understanding Prameha & Blood Sugar Balance
In Ayurveda, Prameha describes a group of metabolic and urinary disorders traditionally associated with changes in metabolism, digestion, body composition, and urination. Madhumeha is one form described within Prameha and is commonly discussed in relation to diabetes and elevated blood sugar.
The Ayurvedic approach to Prameha looks beyond blood sugar alone. It places importance on maintaining balanced Agni (digestive and metabolic function) and addressing imbalances traditionally associated with Kapha, Meda (body fat/adipose tissue), and excessive Kleda (moisture or fluid) in the body.
Herbs such as Gudmar (Gymnema sylvestre), Karela (Bitter Gourd), Jamun, Methi (Fenugreek), Vijaysar, Neem, Amla, and Giloy have traditionally been used in Ayurvedic preparations intended to support metabolic wellness and healthy glucose balance. Different herbs and combinations may be selected depending on the formulation and its intended Ayurvedic purpose.
Through this broader perspective, Ayurvedic Prameha care focuses on supporting healthy metabolism, glucose balance, digestion, and overall metabolic well-being rather than viewing blood sugar as an isolated concern.
Note: Ayurvedic support should complement, not replace, prescribed diabetes treatment or regular blood glucose monitoring.
