Understanding Arshas, Agni & Apana Vayu
In Ayurveda, Arshas refers to piles or haemorrhoidal concerns and is traditionally understood in relation to digestive imbalance and disturbed bowel function. Ayurvedic Arshas Chikitsa considers healthy digestion and comfortable elimination important aspects of care.
A central concept is Agni, the digestive principle responsible for the proper digestion and transformation of food. Manda Agni, or sluggish digestive function, is traditionally considered an important factor in the development of Arshas.
Ayurveda also gives importance to Apana Vayu, a subtype of Vata responsible for downward movement and natural elimination. When Apana Vayu becomes disturbed, bowel regularity and comfortable elimination may be affected, particularly when constipation or difficult stools are present.
Ayurvedic preparations for Arshas may traditionally include herbs and ingredients such as Haritaki, Triphala, Nagakesara, Surana (Jimikand), Kutaja, and Arshoghna herbs, depending on the formulation and its intended Ayurvedic purpose.
Overall, the Ayurvedic approach to Arshas focuses on supporting Agni, balancing Apana Vayu, maintaining regular and comfortable bowel movements, and providing traditional support for anorectal comfort and digestive well-being.
